Ok have a bit of good news to share-- UPS just gave us some jaw-dropping discounts on their service. Just for fun, I decided to check and see if the new discounts UPS gave us really amounted to anything that would save our customers money. I decided to do some comparison shopping for a hypothetical customer in New Hampshire.

I looked online and found a product that looked similar to our popular AA line of over-the-tire wheel straps.

This got me to wondering what UPS would say the actual shipping charges would be from these two locations. I went to UPS Calculate Time and Cost to do this. I loaded in the origin zip code, the destination zip code, and the package weight. I selected “Yes” for the section that asks if you have daily pick-up. If you don't choose this, UPS will return a very high retail shipping estimate.

Here is what the UPS website thought the shipping rate should be for the straps that shipped from Detroit:

So just to make this clear... our system was charging our hypothetical customer in New Hampshire $5.42 LESS than the UPS website estimate. The other guys were charging $8.14 MORE than the UPS website estimate.

How can this be?

The other place is 426 miles closer to the hypothetical customer in New Hampshire. The package weighs one pound less because the straps are shorter. You'd think even before volume discounts, this would give the other guys a pretty big advantage.

The other company is maybe unable or unwilling to bill accurately for UPS costs. Or maybe they have “handling costs”. Doesn't really matter why... either way, it's money out of your pocket.

We're a small enough company, it was easy for us to figure out what to do when UPS came through with some better volume discounts for us. We took a vote! The results were unanimous-- “Give the customers a better deal!” The way we figure it, the less you have to spend on UPS, the more money you'll have to actually buy stuff from us. Plus maybe you'll spread the word that we're nice guys who try to reduce shipping costs for our customers, instead of charging extra.

Stumped about what to do with all the money we're helping you save?  Why not make a donation to the World Food Program?  Right now, they need your help more than ever.  And right now, we'll MATCH whatever amount you donate... $1... $5... $10.  Click here to see how... it's really easy!

Don't think you can make a difference??....   Don't buy into that negative B.S.!
$1 buys 4 meals... that's 4 people who get to eat because somebody decided to help.

$10 buys 40 meals... and with our match, that makes it 80 meals!

If you're going to donate more money, we recommend that you go straight to their website and do it directly:  www.wfp.org

And just for fun, here is a map that shows the distance of both places from the hypothetical customer from New Hampshire:
